The Story of J. Cole – Musical Background Explained
J. Cole was born in the German city of Frankfurt. He and his mother relocated to Fayetteville, North Carolina, when he was 8 months old. Cole frequently mentions his hometown, termed “the Ville.”

J. Cole’s cousin initiated him to rap when he was 12 years old. Cole was motivated to mimic his cousin, who was traveling from Louisiana, and fell deeply in love with rap while joking about and freestyling. Motivated to narrative rap and influenced by rappers such as Canibus, Nas, and Eminem, he began writing verses in notepad. Cole trained to compose beats on an 808 drum machine his mom gave him and began publishing tracks on internet platforms like online casino games under the alias “Therapist” when he was of 17.
Mixtape Marvel
J. Cole launched his debut mixtape in 2007 after completing his degree. He called it The Come Up, a reference to his underground identity. DJ on Point presented The Come Up, which offered deep sound beats, intense and explosive drumming, and a limitless spectrum of themes. J. Cole spoke on everything from his casual college days to the apparently never-ending struggle of the have-nots fighting for transformation.
He followed up with The Warm Up in 2009. This mixtape delves into similar topics, but with stronger lyrics. Cole then launched Friday Night Lights. This time, his mixtape included numerous tracks that were initially planned for his debut album. The sultry, Drake-assisted single “In The Morning” was one of them.
The Road to the Roc
J. Cole had always wanted to collaborate with Jay Z. J. Cole set his mind on collaborating with Jigga initially in his journey. Cole wore a jersey that said, “Produce for Jay Z or die trying” one cold rainy night in 2007. He waited three hours outside Jay-studio Z’s to offer him a rhythm sampled by Idris Muhammad.
Sadly for Cole, Jay Z was uninterested. “Man, I don’t want that,” Hov said plainly. After listening to “Lights Please,” Jay Z asked J. Cole if he wanted to become the first singer contracted to Roc Nation two years later. Jay Z debuted his new signing on “A Star Is Born,” a track from 2009’s The Blueprint 3.
Cole World: The Sideline Story
J. Cole eventually made his Roc Nation debut on September 27, 2011, after multiple delays. Cole World: The Sideline Story’s tracks and skits follow Cole’s path from the “Ville” to the Roc. It’s a concept album about overcoming all hurdles to make it from the sidelines to the limelight.
2014 Forest Hills Drive
J. Cole launched his third studio album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, in December 2014. J. Cole’s boyhood childhood home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, which he resided with his mom, stepdad and brother inspired the album’s name.
