Telling lies has become so normal that we don’t even try to understand why people do it anymore. That is why today we want to try and figure what it is that really motivates people to lie. Telling the truth is relatively simple but people still choose to lie and we can’t help but ask ourselves, why do people lie? telling the truth is always the best way to go about things, but people still choose to tell lies and here is why.

There are a number of factors that will push someone to tell a lie or a series of lies, and below we shall look at some of the reasons why people lie, to begin with.

  • Avoiding Punishment: People usually tell lies to avoid being reprimanded or having to face the consequences of their actions.
  • To get ahead: Another reason why people lie is so that they get ahead, by so doing they are able to get rewards that would have taken them a while too.
  • Protecting another person: Another major reason that motivates people to lie is for the protection of someone who is close to them.
  • For Admiration: People will also tell lies for the sake of admiration. In the sense that their lies will get them to be admired by the people around them.
  • To get out of a situation: Also, people are bound to lie in order for them to be able to get out of certain awkward situations.
  • For the sake of privacy: Lies are also told by people who simply want to be left alone. As much as we do enjoy a good time with the people around us, there are times when we simply want to be left alone. And the only way to get there is by telling a lie or two.
  • For Power: Other people will also lie so that they are able to stay in power. Through the lies that they tell, they will be able to remain in control of situations or people.
