Google mentioned the Night Sight on October 9 when it launched its new phones. However, it’s yet to roll out to the Pixel phones officially. On the other hand, it has released a ported APK app of the Pixel 3 camera. This has been made available to users of the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 3 first so they can taste the magic. The aim of this camera mode is to embitter low-light photography with a phone.

Google is definitely pushing limits here. This is considering the fact that smartphones have small image sensors and tiny lenses. The company has merged the camera hardware with ‘computational photography’.

The Pixel 3 has a fast Snapdragon 845. Also, it comes with a new Pixel Visual Core chip. This means that Google can now carry out some software-based functions that work just like DSLR cameras. DSLR cameras use bulky lenses and big image sensors.

Google has said that a camera in Night sight mode clicks up to 15 photos in a burst. Not just that, it uses less light and a higher number of photos, with a shutter speed of 1/3s. Next, the photos are merged together. After that, the blurred pixels in the photos are discarded.

Thereafter, the details of the image are filled in using algorithms that have been trained using Google’s formidable machine learning techniques. In the process, the exposure is corrected and the right white balance is applied. As a result, users end up with a brighter image with the correct amount of detail, perfect colours and low noise. This is all despite that the image is shot in low light.
