TOP-SELLING ALBUMS: Gold, Abba

The major story from the UK charts is that Abba’s Gold has broken a record by spending 1,000 weeks in the Official Albums Chart Top 100, making it the first album in UK chart history to do so. When it was released in September 1992, Gold went to number one and has remained there ever since, and became the UK’s second most successful album of all time, behind Queen’s Greatest Hits. Thus far in 2021, the album has charted in the Top 40 each week.

 

We’re All Alone In This Together, Dave

With 74,000 first-week sales of his second studio album, Streatham rapper Dave smashed into the number one spot back in July, claiming the greatest UK album launch of 2021 so far. We’re All Alone In This Together, like its Mercury Prize and BRIT-winning predecessor Psychodrama, wows with her searing, issue-driven bars, which this time cover everything from mental health to the Windrush crisis. It’s no doubt the top of the year’s best-received albums.

 

Sour, Olivia Rodrigo

 

With her single “Good 4 U” and her debut album Sour, Olivia Rodrigo, one of the superstars of this year’s BRIT Awards, became the youngest solo artist to achieve the UK chart double. She’s also the first singer since Sam Smith in 2015 to have a debut album top the charts twice. Sour is for you if you’re looking for an enthusiastic pop-punk mash-up of Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift.
