The Game of Softball

It is funny how many people actually think that softball started off as baseball. It is quite shocking for them when they learn that it was inspired by a football. It was 1887 when there was a Thanksgiving game of football in Chicago. Yale was announced as the winning team. And with the excitement in the air, a Yale ex-student playfully threw a punching glove at a Harvard supporter, who then swung at the thrown glove and the commentator shouted play ball!

You can imagine the excitement that was in the air at that time. And because that brought so much joy to people, the Farragut Boat Club decided to put it on the ground and make it a sport. Before anyone knew it a set of rules was designed. It was not long before it spread to other places and then the whole of the United States. By this time it had become a game for everyone world over.
