Origins

The origins of boxing can be traced all the way back to Ancient Egypt, where boxers were trained to protect pharaohs and dignitaries. In 577 BC, Egyptian king Pepi II had his military commander, Harsiese, enter into an agreement with another king named Djet, whereby he agreed to train the latter’s soldiers if they would defend him in return.

Famous Fighters

The World Championship Boxing Rankings are based solely on the performance of top-level championship bouts. We can break down these rankings into three categories; world champions (those ranked 1), champions by division (those ranked 2–3) and contenders (those ranked 4–10). However, there are also several other ranking systems that exist that rank amateur, international or all-time great fighters. For example, Ring Magazine ranks Muhammad Ali 1 in history…

Most boxing fans consider him to be the greatest fighter in the sport’s history. He earned the title “Fighter of the Century” by being named number one in a list compiled by ESPN Sportscenter. Other individuals who have been dubbed legends include Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Earnie Shavers, Roberto Durán, Marvin Hagler and Manny Pacquiao.

Money

There are two major leagues in North America that sanction professional boxing fights. The first is the World Boxing Association (WBA), which oversees events sanctioned by the WBA itself. The second is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which covers boxing events held in member schools across the country. Both organizations follow a similar set of rules when promoting a particular fight. They usually pay no more than 55% of any purse money received above $50,000 to their respective champion after taxes. This means that if the champion earns between $40,000 and $60,000, the athlete will receive around $22,000.
